Thanksgiving in Spitz an der Donau

On the first Sunday in October, Spitz an der Donau traditionally celebrates its great harvest festival – this year on October 5, 2025. In the days leading up to it, many busy hands transform the Spitz church into a veritable sea of flowers: every altar is artfully decorated, and the pulpit, choir, and numerous niches shine in festive splendor.

The parade begins at the old town hall and is accompanied by the Spitz traditional costume band. Members of the winegrowers' association carry richly decorated guild signs and flags, the vineyard goat, a large bunch of grapes, and a statue of Saint Urban. Young winegrowers present the elaborately designed harvest crown, the folk dance group brings the vine leaf arches decorated for the crown dance, and many children proudly carry their harvest baskets. Numerous winegrowers dress in traditional costume, demonstrating their connection to their homeland and traditions.

After the festive mass , visitors can enjoy a varied program on the church square: the folk dance group will perform several dances, the highlight of which, as every year, will be the atmospheric Crown Dance . Meanwhile, the traditional costume band will provide music for the morning pint, and the winegrowers will serve the first Sturm wine of the year – accompanied by fresh bread.
