About the event
The Gothic church of St. Mauritius in Spitz and the medieval glazed tower roof tiles
The Spitzer Parish Church presents itself as an impressive Gothic building from the outside, and its interior, with its three-aisled, net-rib vaulted church and the choir slanted toward the nave, also offers a particularly picturesque effect. The overall impression is shaped by the rich Baroque furnishings. Of particular note is the important carved Christ and the Apostles cycle from the Soft Style period (around 1400) on the gallery parapet of the central nave. The complete preservation of all thirteen figures is a rare sight, not to mention their remarkable artistic quality, with the largely original polychromy.
The tower roofing of the Spitzer Parish Church is of supra-regional importance, as it represents a very rare original late Gothic set of glazed roof tiles, which the Federal Monuments Office has classified as worthy of preservation. During the restoration and repair work carried out last year, the required new tiles, manufactured by a specialized ceramics workshop, were matched as closely as possible to the original medieval roofing in both format and color. This unique piece is unique in Austria. Following the roofing of the tower, the tower facades were also repaired and restored.
The parish church boasts many interesting and remarkable details, both on its exterior and interior, which are best appreciated on Heritage Day, either through a visit on site or with an expert guide. At 11 a.m., guests will be officially welcomed by Dr. Hans Kronbichler and Dr. Gerold Eßer from the Federal Monuments Office, State Conservation Office for Lower Austria.
The heart of this special event is the traditional sounds of folk music, presented by talented bands from the four districts of Lower Austria. From gentle melodies to rousing rhythms, they offer a wide range of musical entertainment that immerses guests in the regional culture.
The idyllic locations of the vineyard terraces, including the Setzberg vineyard, the Hartberg vineyard, the Rotes Tor vineyard, the Zornberghütte, the Hinterhaus ruins, and the 1000-Eimerberg vineyard, create an atmospheric backdrop that further intensifies the experience. Here, visitors can enjoy the beauty of nature while experiencing the harmonious combination of Wachau wine and music.
The Spitzer winegrowers contribute significantly to the success of the event by pampering guests with exquisite wines and delicious snacks. From light white wines to full-bodied white wines, the selection offers a variety that appeals to the individual preferences of every guest. The small snacks perfectly complement the culinary experience and invite guests to discover the regional specialties.
