Wachau Solstice in Spitz an der Donau

One of the most impressive and atmospheric summer solstice celebrations will take place on June 22, 2024, in Spitz an der Donau and the Wachau region. This year, at 9:45 p.m., the torches will be lit in the Spitz vineyard terraces to celebrate this traditional custom.

Over 3,000 torches will be lit at numerous burning sites in the Spitzer vineyard terraces and along the Danube. Piles of wood will be stacked and set ablaze at the 1000-Bucket Hill and on the Danube embankment. The Red Gate will be recreated with torches, and the Spitzer coat of arms will glow in the torchlight. High on the Singerriedel, a cross carved into the hillside will watch over the Danube Valley. On the Vorderer Atzberg, the mining symbol, "Schlägel & Eisen," will be recreated with torches. The imposing Hinterhaus ruins will be illuminated along their contours with torches, the Spitzer Lusthaus will be recreated with torches, and occasional torches will be lit in the vineyard terraces.

Drinks and snacks from Spitzer clubs and restaurants will be available at the Danube promenade from 3 p.m.

BURNING TIME OF THE TORCHES

At 9:45 p.m. the torches will be lit in Spitz and Arnsdorf.

FIREWORKS DISPLAY TIME

The fireworks will be set off sporadically from 10:00 p.m.

Enjoy the spectacle from the Danube embankment in Spitz or Arnsdorf, or directly from your accommodation, starting at 9:30 p.m. A glass of Spitz wine is the perfect way to end this shortest night of the year—either at the picturesque Spitz Danube embankment or in one of the cozy beer gardens or Heurigen courtyards.

FERRY TIMES ROLL-ROAD FERRY

The rolling ferry operates between Spitz and Arnsdorf until 11:30 PM. Due to safety precautions, there will be a break from approximately 9:00 PM until the ships resume their journey. After 7:15 PM, only passengers will be transported, no bicycles or motor vehicles.
